Friday I have an Ugly Sweater holiday shindig, but unfortunately I won't have time to pass by the usual haunts in search of colorful knits to make Bill Cosby proud. However, if the vacation gods gave Miami a snow day this week I wouldn't mind passing by the following:

a day in palm beach
I spent the day in palm beach with the family, and was able to pay a visit to a couple of cosignment shops while I was there. Most of them were closed by the time we made it to that side of Palm Beach, but if you go the bulk of the good ones are all in one little shopping center on North County Road. Some pics.

When shopping is totally out of the question for anytime in the near future, a visit to the thrift leaves you more than satisfied when 20 dollars can get you a belt, a pair of python clutches, a fun skirt, some scarves, and a colorful beach cover-up.
Then my lucky eye, which never fails me, found this! Luckily Frankie saw my face and got it for me hehehe....Its perfect!

C. Madeleine's is one of Miami's hidden spots for vintage. The 10,000 square foot store is divided by decade and will leave you browsing for hours. Aside from great designer vintage, they have a bridal section, a section for international vintage (think old school kimonos and ethnic costume).
In the recent W magazine featuring Bruce Weber's photos shot in Miami, Kate Moss and clan headed to the shop for a "fashion field trip"

ebay crush: beetlejuice beetlejuice beetlejuice
The other day I saw a girl in a really cute black and white striped dress, so she inspired me to look up stripes on ebay, and this is what I found (and won) I know its a little crazy, but with a hint of brown it should become more wearable. I think it just looks weird on the mannequin. Speaking of which, I dont even know its going to fit, after I bid I realized it was a size 2. Oh well.

Nothing makes me want to go thrifting...
....Like a little Chloe Sevigny.
I picked up the latest issue of the French self service magazine a month ago and was treated to an entire issue all about her. This magazine has amazing art direction, greaty experimentation with type and image. Really recommend it, even with its 25 dollar price tag, its hard cover and makes a very interesting coffee table piece. The photography is dynamite,( i love that word)
Anyway, back to Chloe, I don't know what it is, maybe her hint of prep that she somehow manages to make look cool or the fact that her hair works in more ways than one. She also is a big advocate of mom jeans, and god knows I love those.
The only time I've ever run into her was at that Church thrift I mentioned before on Park Ave S. and 21st. She just seems like she got a lot of good quirk.
Carla sent me this. See, she's funny. Flamingo Plaza anyone?

Book Review #6: Second hand ideas
I picked up this book, Flea Market Style, by Emily Chalmers, a while ago, but now it will come in handy. It has great interiors that give plenty of ideas for someone going for this look. I'm having trouble deciding exactly the style I'm trying to go for, I want some mid-century modern pieces, but a) I don't have a big budget and b) my anthropologie loving side keeps veering my eyes for some things frilly. I'd be ok doing frilly but my room in Miami is already so pink and french and all that jazz, I want something completely different. What I like about this book is that many of the rooms have modern pieces but have managed to warm it up with some details from other periods, and it works. We'll see. For now I may have to settle for a mattress and a futon for my visitors.

In the spirit of today...
I wore my most romantic shirt. Sequins, rhinestones, pastels, and so much goodness. I picked it up at Episode in Camdentown. Episode is a chain of Dutch thriftstores that has an amazing selection of used clothing and accessories separated by "style" For example, there will be a bin of kaffiyehs in a range of colors, or a selection of military shorts hung together, grandma sweaters all on the same rack, or white sneakers lined up on the floor. You still get to sort through clothes to find the magic item, but your chances of finding "it" go up tenfold.

flamingo plaza
Miami isn't exactly the mecca of second-hand shopping, but one strip mall in Hialeah has been attracting the blooming hipster set for over a decade. Flamingo Plaza is located right off Martin Luther King Drive and Le Jeune. Unlike specialty thrift stores, where the clothes is usually over-priced and picked out for a specific crowd, this set of shops force you to search and destroy among sequined tops, used lingerie, and occasional cat calls from the "viejo verdes" lurking in the aisles. I've had some good finds including a ceramic donkey I found in the parking lot whom I named Van Gogh after the absence of his ears. Another recent purchase was a red leather lobster hand puppet. Don't ask, it was just so odd, I couldn't resist. What about the clothes? Sometimes you leave with nothing other times you walk out with a pair of white leather dancing shoes for $2.99.
Brand new, never been used, they called me from a stack of what I assume was an overstock selection from a dance store, there were about 50 pairs of different white dance shoes, but these were the only ones in my size that I liked. Not bad considering the Repetto ones were at Bloomingdale's for about $175, and who even knows how much the United Bamboo ones cost. I love white shoes.
The Repetto and United Bamboo versions.
